Fanciful plan for ‘Las Vegas’ in Cyprus appears in British tabloid

A fanciful plan to transform Varosha – the abandoned resort next to Famagusta – into the ‘Las Vegas of the Mediterranean’ has appeared in the British tabloid, the Daily Express.

The report claims a consortium of international billionaire businessmen was mulling developing the area, which has lay derelict since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

The proposal, the paper claimed, was also supported by hoteliers who viewed the United Nations-administered area of Famagusta as the best location for this “one billion pound” project.

The development would see dozens of casinos, luxury hotels, shops, and restaurants spring up along the coast, according to the paper.
