Military training underway in the skies over Cyprus

Training activities are taking place today and tomorrow in the skies above Cyprus, as part of the annual military cooperation between Cyprus and her allies.

According to an announcement from the Ministry of Defence, the activities will be conducted within the Nicosia FIR, the airspace above the Cyprus and further beyond.

Exercises will include fighter jet flights and National Guard ground forces.

The aim is to improve collaboration between Cyprus and her allies, upgrade readiness and increase the expertise of the armed forces.

Separately, US Navy exercises carried out off the coast of Cyprus last week were designed to send a signal to adversaries that attacks in the region will be met with a swift, unyielding response.

Capt. Bill Gallagher, Naval Special Warfare Group 2 commander, said his team’s recent collaboration with Cypriot forces “sends a clear message.”

The US Navy wrapped up three weeks of training last Wednesday. ‘The sailors and their Cypriot counterparts took part in drills intended to hone skills needed in covert missions and search and seizure operations at sea,’ Stars and Stripes reported.
