Christodoulides in ‘constant contact’ with new Cyprus envoy

President Christodoulides says he is continuing efforts to achieve a resumption of talks on the Cyprus problem.

Asked about the statement from the UN Secretary General’s personal envoy for the Cyprus problem, María Ángela Holguín, who referred to trust building, Christodoulides said that trust building between the Republic of Cyprus and Turkey is necessary.

‘I welcome the fact that she issued this particular statement to everyone,’ he said during an event near Larnanca. ‘I am in constant contact with Ms Holguín, she may not be in Cyprus, but we are in constant contact. She will come to Cyprus to continue her effort.’

He said despite the difficulties and challenges, there was no choice but to do everything possible to resume the talks, build on the acquis to date and to achieve the objective, ‘which is none other than the resolution of the Cyprus problem’.

Earlier this month, Cuellar embarked on efforts in Nicosia to resume long-stalled peace negotiations. She said she was ready to contribute to the resumption of the peace process.

During her visit, she met with Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar separately.
