Big increase of newly registered cars in Cyprus

New figures show an increase in car sales in Cyprus.

In February 2024, the total registrations of motor vehicles numbered 4.346, recording an increase of 55,5% compared to 2.795 in February 2023. Passenger saloon cars registered a rise of 50,5% to 3.443, from 2.287 in February 2023.

The main developments during the period January-February 2024 compared to the corresponding period of 2023 are summarised as follows:

(a) The total registrations of motor vehicles increased by 45,0% to 8.589 in January-February 2024, from 5.923 in January – February 2023.

(b) Passenger saloon cars increased to 6.873 from 4.780 in January – February 2023, recording a rise of 43,8%. Of the total passenger saloon cars, 3.028 or 44,1% were new and 3.845 or 55,9% were used cars. Rental cars in particular recorded a fall of 5,6% to 506.

(c) The share of petrol powered passengers’ cars to the total of this category of vehicles decreased in January – February 2024 to 50,3% (from 58,4% in the corresponding period of the preceding year) and that of diesel powered cars to 10,3% in 2024 from 11,4% in 2023. On the other hand, the share of electric cars rose from 2,6% in 2023 to 3,1% in 2024 and of hybrid cars from 27,6% to 36,3%.

(d) Motor coaches and buses registered in January – February 2024 increased to 59, from 15 in the same period of 2023.

(e) Goods conveyance vehicles increased by 58,4% to 966 in January-February 2024, compared to 610 in January – February 2023. In particular, light goods vehicles increased by 62,8% to 765, heavy goods vehicles by 18,6% to 102, road tractors (units of trailers) by 57,1% to 33 and rental vehicles doubled to 66.

(f) Mopeds < 50cc registered in January – February 2024 increased to 92 compared to 21 in the corresponding period of the previous year.

(g) Mechanised cycles > 50cc increased by 21,3% to 484 in January-February 2024, compared to 399 in the same period of 2023.
