Bulgaria’s GERB-UDF coalition set to form new government

Bulgaria’s President Rumen Radev on Monday asked the GERB-UDF coalition, the largest group in the parliament, to form a government.

Mariya Gabriel, the coalition’s nominee for prime minister, has seven days to present the structure and composition of the Council of Ministers. Her coalition won 69 seats in the 240-member Parliament in last year’s elections.

“I accept this mandate with a sense of responsibility as Bulgaria needs stability,” Gabriel said.

Former Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov submitted his resignation on March 5 and the parliament approved it the following day. Denkov was nominated for his position by the We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB) coalition, the second-largest group in the parliament.

Denkov’s resignation paved the way for the GERB-UDF to lead the government for nine months as agreed following last year’s elections. According to deal, Denkov was to serve as prime minister for the first nine months, and then the GERB-UDF’s representative Gabriel, who was deputy prime minister and foreign minister in Denkov’s cabinet, was to take over.

Negotiations are underway between the two coalitions regarding details of the rotation.
